Abstract

The life forms represented in the vegetation of Marriguda RF of Khammam District of Andhra Pradesh are Mesophanerophytes (24.4%) , Microphanerophytes (18%) , Nanophanerophytes (5.1%) , Chamaephytes (9%) , Hemicryptophytes (6.2%) , Geophytes (11%) , Therophytes (23%) , lianas (2.2%) , parasites (0.7%) and epiphytes (0.3%). Biological spectrum of the area is Phanerophytic. The dominance ofphanerophytes appears to be due to high rainfall , temperature and low biotic pressure. The biological spectrum of Marriguda RF is compared with Raunkiaer's normal spectrum and two local environments.

Abstract

The plants of genus Cordia comprise of trees and shrubs which are widely distributed in warmer regions. The plants of this species have long been used in traditional and folk medicine for treating various illnesses. Some plants in this species were exhaustively explored and some others are yet to be. Substantial progresses on their chemical and pharmacological properties of some species have been made. In India, the fruits of this species are consumed as vegetable. The pharmacological studies carried out with extracts and purified compounds indicates that the plants of Cordia species posses analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiviral and antifertility activities. Various compounds like flavonoids, triterpenes, tannins, alkaloids and fatty acids possessing wide range of bioactivities were isolated from different plant parts of Cordia species. Based on these reports it is clearly indicated that the plants of Cordia genus possess potential therapeutic actions.

Abstract

The paper is a brief historical resume on the genesis and development of familial concept as a natural unit in plants and its nomenclature. It explains in the backdrop of Latin grammar, how names with diverse terminations once dominated family nomenclature in taxonomic literature. It also narrates the logical efforts that followed to rationalize the family names to its present state leaving room for use of alternative names for a few angiosperm families. Besides, the paper discusses the proper use of the names Leguminosae, Fabaceae and Papilionaceae, and the associated problems.
